Seatons Cucumber Seed Oil

The cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is related to the tomato, pumpkin and squash family of fruits and originates from northern India where it has been cultivated for 3000 years. It was, and still is today, used for food, juice and also rubbed on the face. Roman traders brought the cucumber to Europe around 100AD and it is now grown in many parts of the world including southern Europe, the Caribbean, south Asia and South America. Cucumber oil is produced by cold pressing the seeds of the fruit to give a golden yellow oil.

Cucumber oil is very light and is easily absorbed into the skin. The oil contains four main fatty acids, natural tocopherols, phytosterols and a variety of minerals including potassium. It is high in both oleic acid (14-20%) and linoleic acid (60-68%) making it an excellent choice for moisturisation formulations. Phytosterols help the skin to strengthen its lipid barrier, restoring moisture balance and smoothing the skins surface while improving its elasticity. Phytosterols are also known for their ability to nourish and stimulate skin cells to encourage regeneration.

The combination of phytosterols and fatty acids makes cucumber oil suited for moisturising formulations such as body butters and face creams, eye creams, hair and lip care products, make up removers and shaving creams or gels. As cucumber oil is quickly absorbed into the skin, it gives a non greasy feel to formulations.
